Genus
The genus Phalangium was described by Linnaeus, 1758:618 as follows:
"Pedes VIII. Oculi vericis duo contigui, duo laterales. Frons antennis pediformibus. Abdomen rotundum, muticum."

Type species
The type-species was originally designated by Latreille, 1810:425 as "Phalangium cornutum [male]; opilio [female], Lin."
P. cornutum is now universally accepted as the male of P. opilio.
 This designation of P. opilio has been repeated and confirmed in:
